Our core principles are based upon the educational, spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of our students. We believe that students engage fully and reach their maximum poten,al when the environment is both caring and orderly, combined with teaching that fires their imagination and brings learning to life.
- Social Use of Language Programme (SULP) deals with issues relevant to teenagers and young adults with a range of needs including autism, language difficulties, learning difficulties and social/emotional difficulties.
- Rapid Plus is an online software that allocates to the students specific reading and comprehension and spelling tasks for their ability. This is an innovative way for students to practise their reading skills independently, helping to build fluency and improve comprehension.
- Lexia is a technology based reading programme that enables students of all ages and abilities to master essential reading skills. Students will sit a placement test and start off at the appropriate place for them and then work through set tasks to build and improve their skills.
- Golden Curriculum English is used to develop key literacy skills for students who have literacy difficulties that impact upon their ability to access the mainstream school curriculum.
- GCSE Learning Options Pathway is used with students who are identified through the options process as being in the ‘Purple Pathway’. During their time in Supported Learning, these students complete a number of courses that are more vocational in nature, designed to keep them engaged and motivated and have a focus on developing their key skills in literacy and numeracy and are designed to maximise the targeted students’ academic potential.
- Direct support for students with EAL is co-ordinated by the EAL Support Teacher, with support from our Additional Educational Needs Coordinator and a visiting teacher from the language and achievement service and a Teaching Assistants who acts as a Key Worker for EAL students.
- Potential barriers to learning are overcome by individual assessment, advice to teachers and teaching assistants and support for the student in terms of self-esteem and sociability.
- Students with EAL are encouraged to take GCSE’s in their first languages and share their talents and cultural experiences with their peers.
- Older EAL students act as buddies for younger EAL students. We encourage students who have English as an additional language to train as Peer Mentors or Young Interpreters.
