SIXTH FORM PHILOSOPHY STUDENTS TAUGHT BY INTERNATIONAL LEADING EXPERTS

On 2nd December the Subject Leader of Religious Education, Mr Capone, took a group of fifteen year 12 and 13 A Level philosophy students to a conference in London. The conference, which was run by Academy Conferences, gave the students the opportunity to deepen their learning by listening to four lectures covering topics on Ethical Frameworks, Arguments for God’s existence, challenges to Pluralism and the nature of the soul. Students also received guidance on how to achieve an ‘A’ grade in their essays and listened to differing perspectives on solutions to the Problem of Evil.

The conference allowed students to experience how the different topics we study in class relate to the wider international philosophy community, university lecturers and world renowned thinkers, including Julie Arliss, Dr Timothy Mawson and Professor Keith Ward.

The students were enthusiastic about how the visit has given depth to their knowledge and understanding. Their comments included: “At the philosophy conference, the Ontological Argument was broken down and clarified and my perspective on whether or not God exists has shifted slightly”, and “the philosophy conference was a great help academically. It really helped me have a better understanding of the philosophy course as a whole.”
