Art & Design Curriculum Intent Statement

LOVE

Our vision is for students to develop their visual literacy, communication skills and personal expression in both the material and virtual worlds. Each student is seen as unique and therefore encouraged to develop their own personal artistic journey. We aim to build confidence and self-esteem, promoting enjoyment, insight and engagement. Art makes the world accessible and defines the time we live in. It’s a world to treasure and throw ourselves into. As teachers we are nurturing our students understanding of this. From inclusion and diversity to exploring and celebrating similarities and differences between peoples, places and cultures.

LEARN

Art craft and design education provides and inspires personal expression, cultural understanding, creative and practical responses, promoting imaginative risk taking to provide solutions to our material, emotional, social and virtual worlds. A world class art craft and design education will engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to participate in, experiment with, invent and create their own works of art craft and design. Pupils should be able to think creatively and critically. Students learn transferable skills, they develop critical, creative, and analytical thinking skills that include problem solving risk taking, organisation and personal expression.

LIVE

They should investigate and evaluate a wide range of creative outcomes, from the past and present to develop vigorous understanding of the many disciplines within art craft and design and how they shape our history and future. This will enable pupils to contribute as confident citizens and ambitious future professionals to the culture, creativity, economic success, leisure, material and emotional wellbeing of our society within both national and global context.

LEAD

Our intent is for the curriculum to promote a curiosity and love for the subject, alongside developing student’s ability to be independent learners and thinkers. Learning is developed through the journey and understanding of our four main core principles; Research, explore, record and present. Ultimately accessing pathways through education to employability in the creative, cultural, digital media and heritage industries - developing a passion for life, to lead and inspire others.
