Year 12 Apprenticeship Talks
Apprenticeship awareness – June
In June, our Year 12 students had the opportunity to explore the growing world of apprenticeships and discover the resources available to help them find and apply for these opportunities.
Michelle from ASK Apprenticeships delivered a coaching session to 35 of our Year 12 students on the different pathways and skills available to them. With the apprenticeship industry growing rapidly, it’s more important than ever for students to understand the range of opportunities and materials available. This includes the government website and ‘not going to uni’ platform which enables students to find more information and apprenticeships than they would through conventional methods. By helping students navigate the vast array of information to find apprenticeships, they will be able to find opportunities that align with their chosen industry and personal strengths. Following this workshop, students will be better positioned to go further.
Interview skills – July
Following the success of June’s apprenticeship workshop, many students were eager to further develop their application skills. In response, Michelle returned in July to lead a follow-up session focused on interview preparation for both apprenticeship and university pathways. Both pathways require interview skills, and laying the foundations now will alleviate stress and mistakes in the future beyond their applications.
During the workshop, students learnt about the STAR technique, which explains how to answer behavioural questions by drawing on past experiences - which many interviewers prefer as it makes assessment and understanding easier. They also learnt to leverage buzz words from the application description to create a specialised application and stand out amongst other interview candidates. To solidify this knowledge, the students practised paired interviews and implemented the skills they had learnt during the workshop. These life skills were adopted enthusiastically by the students.
