  • The Bright Ideas Challenge!

    Fri 21 May 2021

The Bright Ideas Challenge: What will cities look like in 2050? How will they be powered to be vibrant, healthy and clean places to live? That’s the question Shell have put to students across the country in their Bright Ideas Challenge. As a department we have had our Year 7 and 8 students working to design their own solutions that could power cities of the future. Due to the high calibre of entries submitted by our students we have decided as a department to pick a winning group per class, who will be shared on the school’s social media accounts next week. A final overall winning group will be entered into the National Bright Ideas Challenge on behalf of the entire school with a chance of winning up to £10,000 for the school, high-tech goodie bags and action-packed educational experiences.

The winning idea for our in-school portion of the competition belongs to class 7MI /IT. “Our turbine will go in a sewage pipe, and every time waste water is run, it will flow through the turbine. As the waste water flows by, the turbine spins around. The turbine converts the energy of the flowing waste water into mechanical energy. The mechanical energy is then converted into electricity by the hydroelectric generator that is attached to the turbine.” This energy would then be shared across local areas. Not only did they research and design their innovative idea, pupils also created a prototype to support their idea. This idea would not only work in the UK, but could be developed for countries with less access to electricity or historical areas that cannot have more modern methods of harnessing green energy, such as solar panels.

Please join us as we wish the pupils good luck with their inventive idea as we wait for the outcome of the Bright Ideas Challenge 2021. For more details of Shell’s Bright Ideas Challenge please visit: www.shell.co.uk and search for “Bright Ideas Challenge”.

  • CAFOD!

    Thu 20 May 2021

In the final week of term, each gate had a bucket of water which students were encouraged to donate into. They could leave coppers, pound coins and anything in between. We also had a water relay in which year groups competed to get as much water around all of their forms first. The year group with the most change was Year 10! We also created our very own St. Simon Stock ‘Water for Life’ CAFOD Campaign water bottles. They are sports bottles and most importantly reusable! This means we are not only raising money for a fantastic cause but doing encouraging sustainability too. All through the last week of term Staff were encouraged to put The Proclaimers to shame and note down their step count. The staff member who walks the furthest in a day (and donates!) received a three-course meal voucher! The lucky (and knackered!) winner was Mrs Akhetuamen. In total we recorded 723,366 steps over the course of the last week of term. Our aim was to raise £750 for a Community Water Supply and we smashed it! Well done and thank you everyone who got involved!

  • Helping Your Child Overcome Maths Anxiety & Build Mathematical Resilience

    Thu 20 May 2021

Last week, the Maths department shared information with parents about a webinar called “Helping Your Child Overcome Maths Anxiety & Build Mathematical Resilience”, which was run by Eedi. The webinar went through:

    1. What maths anxiety is
    2. How to spot the signs
    3. Practical strategies to help your child cope
    4. Actionable tips on helping them build mathematical resilience

A number of parents got in touch to express their interest, but also their disappointment if they were unable to attend, but thankfully the webinar was recorded and can be found here! Those who did attend have reported how useful they found the content covered. Parents mentioned that it was interesting to have a better understanding of where maths anxiety comes from, and also to see the impact that time pressure can have on a student to process information and act upon it – something that can be said for any subject in the school.

If we hear about anything like this in the future, we will be sure to share it with parents.

    Wed 19 May 2021

Today we have been celebrating National Numeracy Day. In maths lessons we have been looking at maths anxiety, how people use maths in their everyday lives and the maths used in 10 careers. Students and parents/carers can assess more resources and videos via the link: https://www.nationalnumeracy.org.uk/numeracyday?utm_source=1416

  • Non-Uniform Day!

    Mon 17 May 2021

    Well done! 😁

Students participated in a non-school uniform day at the end of April, raising funds for Place2Be which is a Mental Health Charity for young people and an organisation we are working with. Over £500 was raised for them. £500 was also raised for the Catholic Crisis Fund, who provide emergency support for young people and their families. Great Job!
