Heart of Kent Hospice
Fri 28 Jan 2022Yesterday Karen Newton-Anker from the Heart of Kent Hospice visited our Year 12 IBCP students. She wanted to thank them for their role in the raising of funds for the HOKH.
Students raised £1500 by selling raffle tickets and helping out at a fantastic afternoon tea organised by Mrs Pilcher, our KS3 Pastoral Manager.
The students really enjoyed the experience and are now looking for more challenges so they can raise more money for this worthwhile cause. This work cements the link between St Simon Stock and the HOKH because this is the 20th anniversary of the school supporting this organisation. Over these 20 years the school has raised just under £25K which is a phenomenal amount.

Sabre Fencing
Tue 25 Jan 2022Do you fancy joining our Sabre Fencing Club?
If your heart beats faster when swords clash and duels are fought to the death, or when lightsabres hum and whirr and crackle as they connect – then you should try fencing.
St Simon Stock now offers Sabre Fencing to Years 7 and 8, and we hope to extend the provision to KS4 in September. In the sessions you will learn the basics of how to hit and avoid your opponent’s blade, as well as how to move effectively and score points.
After a footwork warm-up, there is some technical blade-work before each session ends with free-fencing, where you get a chance to wield the steel yourself.
All kit is provided by our fully qualified Sabre Fencing coach, Dr Kossuth. Don’t miss out on the fun and the opportunity to learn how to handle a sword.

Stocky speaks up
Thu 20 Jan 2022Stocky Speaks Up!
For a number of years now the English Department at St Simon Stock has been promoting not only literature and literacy, but also the ability to speak with polish and aplomb.
As such, we are proud to be affiliated with the English-Speaking Union (you can admire their logo on our homepage), which works to raise the profile of spoken English in education in the form of speeches, debates and dramatic monologues.
Throughout the year they run a number of competitions, such as ‘Performing Shakespeare’, which we regularly participate in.

Functional Skills Success
Thu 20 Jan 2022Functional Skills Success
Year 9 (and some year 10) pupils have taken their first externally assessed nation-wide exam for a long time – and excelled.
More than 80% of pupils passed this first stepping stone on the path to their English GCSE. Functional Skills is an English Language exam, which tests reading and writing as well as speaking and listening skills in three separate papers, so is a very demanding assessment.
At level 2, AQA (the examination boards) states that a pass is roughly equivalent to a grade 4 in GCSE English Language.
The pupils were all gathered together to open their results envelopes and emotions rode high as they reaped the rewards for their hard work. Those that did not quite make the cut the first time round, can re-take the part that didn’t go according to plan in March, and we wish them all the best for that.
Congratulations and very well done to all pupils!

Covid-19 Update-Following Government announcement yesterday.
Thu 20 Jan 2022Covid-19 Update-Following Government announcement yesterday.
Students will not be required to wear face coverings in lessons with effect from today, Thursday 20th January 2022.
Any student wishing to continue to wear a face covering in lessons is welcome to do so.
Face masks in communal areas remain in place until Thursday 27th January-this will include in the restaurant queue and in corridors.
As a school we need to maintain a vigilance in protecting each other as much as possible. This includes keeping rooms well ventilated and asking students to hand sanitise on entry to lessons and exit from lessons and supporting staff in wiping down desks.
For those participating in Lateral Flow Testing, the advice is to keep testing twice a week.
