  • Sixth Form Catenian Public Speaking Competition 2019

    Wed 12 Dec 2018

Congratulations to Angelica Tuazon and Clairon Opulencia who both took part in the Sixth Form Catenian Public Speaking Competition 2019 at the Bishop Thomas Grant School, in Streatham, London on Wednesday 10th October 2018. Even though the standard of competition was extremely high, Clairon and Angelica were outstanding ambassadors for our school and deserve high recognition for their speeches. Angelica gave a speech on the Socratic Paradox and Clairon on the works of Nietzsche, specifically the idea that you should live your life as if you had to live it again, which is a philosophy many of us can relate to. .

They spoke in front of ten of their peers from a variety of Catholic schools from the Southwark Diocese. Both students gave the audience pause for thought and received a lot of praised by the judges for their knowledge of the subjects and public-speaking skills. They represented some of the many talents we have in our school and should be proud of their efforts

  • Valley Park 2 – 0 SSSCS

    Tue 11 Dec 2018
On a bitterly cold, wet evening Stocky made the short trip across town to play Valley Park under their lights. In a poor match from both sides Stocky could not beat the elements whilst struggling on the big pitch and the adverse weather conditions. A goal either side of half time was enough to seal this fixture for Valley and leave Stocky disappointed that they failed to turn up to this league match.
  • GCSE Art Nativity

    Tue 11 Dec 2018
The GCSE Art class 9B are working together to produce a very unusual piece of work based on the Nativity story. They are using light and shadow by making puppets inspired by ancient traditional Indian shadow art. These puppets are jointed and finely decorated with cut out pattern. The students’ sketchbooks with their working drawings will also be on show. As the figures and backgrounds come to life, students can see the work growing on the windows of B9. The plan is to film the moving puppets performing the Christmas Story. Happy Christmas from all of us in Art!
  • STEM Day

    Mon 10 Dec 2018

Fifteen Year 11 students went with Ms Whitehead to Brompton Barracks, home of the Royal Engineers, on 21 November. We had a warm welcome from our guide, Tony, who looked after us during the day, directed us to our activities, showed us where to find lunch and answered our questions.

We visited a wide range of stands in which we learnt about the different ways that the Army uses STEM subjects in their everyday work. We heard from Bomb Disposal about how they prepare to defuse bombs and IEDs (Improvised Explosive Devices), the importance of testing the fuels that are used in aeroplanes, tanks and trucks, the teams who look after the buildings and put up tiles and lay bricks, those that design walls from composite materials to check that walls are blast-proof, designers of airbases to make sure that the fuel dumps are well away from the residential quarters, how to assess the ground to ensure that the buildings have the correct foundations. We also had a chance to look round a Terrier tank and to try on protective equipment.

We took part in three challenges during the day; designing and building a bridge which was tested to see how strong it was, design and build a rocket and finally to build the tallest structure using wooden strips and small bulldog clips. In these challenges we were competing against the other 300 students from 7 schools who were also attending the event. I am very pleased and proud to say that Stocky came out as the winning team!

I would like to pay tribute to all the students who came on the trip; everyone took part in the challenges, listened to the various presentations and were the first school to become quiet when the introductory and concluding talks were being given.

Even though it was a cold day and we spent the majority of the day outside all the students remained cheerful and enthusiastic, and it was an absolute joy to spend the day with the Stocky team.

We featured on the Army Snapchat story as the winning team, and we were included in the local ITV news that evening.

Thanks go to Mr. Tillott who drove the minibus for us.

  • Bridges Reflection

    Fri 07 Dec 2018
Over the past two weeks students have investigated ‘Faith in the presence of God’ in reflections (one of the 5 Lasallian Core Principles!). Each student was encouraged to think about what challenges their faith and how they could overcome them. They were split into groups and challenged to build a bridge. Points were awarded to the bridges which were the strongest, the longest and most beautiful. This was all done to remind them that faith is the belief that someone is always there to help, no matter how big or small your problem might be, we must simply have the courage to ask for that help.
  • Heart of Kent Hospice – Christmas Fayre

    Wed 05 Dec 2018

Thank you to all of you who helped out at the Christmas Fayre at The Heart of Kent Hospice on Saturday 8th December. It was a great success and fantastic to see lots of Stocky students giving up their time for their community.

Around 300 people attended the event and we raised just over £3000.

    Merry Christmas
